War Against the Walking Dead

We’re read our survival guides, played our zombie killing first person shooters and we think we have an idea of what to do. In fact, those who are clued-up and have followed Sean’s advice in The Official Zombie Handbook (UK) have their 90 day survival plan well and truly sorted. But what happens once we stumble out of our fortresses after the initial 90 days?

Somehow we’ve got to take this country back from the flesh-eaters and in the chaotic collapse of the world as we know it we need an orderly roadmap to get us back in control. Zombie survival expert Sean T. Page's War Against the Walking Dead is just that roadmap.
More than just a survival guide it explores the research of many esteemed scientists, supported by historical examples, to provide infallible advice on the practical application of military doctrine against an enemy without fear, remorse or a heartbeat. It teaches us how to take back our world, house by house, street by street and shire by shire - to free ourselves from an occupation of the undead.
From communing with the spirits of the recently deceased to understand what makes them tick, small and large-scale combat maneuvers and the terrifying discovery of the devastating phenomenon of the ghoul meta-horde, to the practical application of the microlight. This book is encyclopedic.
War Against the WalkingDead yields a very British brand of dark comedy, laughing in the very face of fear, to lift a text with otherwise deadly serious undertones. It is an essay in the exploration of traditional methods of warfare, coup and insurrection in the context of a world overrun by the undead. It is a crowning achievement that should be in every zombie survivalist’s library and its text might mark what could just possibly be our finest, or last, hour.

Outpost by Adam Baker

Outpost - Adam Baker's 2011 debut novel is a bitterly and chillingly bleak tale of isolation and desperation set on a derelict refinery platform in the Arctic Ocean.

They took to job to escape the World. They didn't expect the World to end.

Hope is dashed in one of the most inhospitable places on earth time and time again. Just when you think things can't get any worse another bombshell is dropped. The crew battles the environment, starvation, despair and something far more sinister as the world around them falls apart and they are left to fend for themselves through the long, dark Arctic winter.

The book's prose, punctuated with bold staccato exposition, pulls you through the tale at breakneck pace. The tale plays out like a classic 80's sci-fi action-horror with justified comparisons to The Thing, Alien and The Abyss.

Outpost is an edge of your seat tale about survival in the face of overwhelming odds but it is also about finding yourself and facing your demons.

It is a zombie novel, but not a typical zombie novel. City streets, military bases and farmhouses are replaced with the harsh chill of the Arctic and the science fiction undertones keep it fresh and engaging.

Outpost is easy to read and it is clear to see why Mr Baker has caught the attention of the mainstream. Outpost is a book that your auntie or uncle might read on holiday, you don't need pre-conceived notions about zombies or science fiction to tear through it like a pack of hungry ghouls and the characters are sympathetic, believable and engaging.

Turn down the lights and be sure to wrap up warm.

Outpost is published by Hodder & Stoughton.

Adam Baker's highly anticipated second novel Juggernaut is scheduled for release in February 2012.

Zombie Science 1Z - Live Lecture

"Zombies" they say, "...why that's just not possible."

If I had a pound for every time someone had said that, I'd have... well, a field trip to Poundland that's for sure.

For many who take an interest in the undead rising from the grave to feast upon us, topics such as:

What causes zombieism?
Should zombies walk, or run?
Wouldn't zombies simply rot away? or
What is the best way to kill a zombie?

...have been the fuel of many an armchair debating society's discourse.

If only we had science to back up what we know, from instinct, to be true. If only.

Zombie Science 1Z is the answer to our prayers. At last, an established scientist, with a white lab-coat and pens in his pocket no less, is willing to put his head above the scientific community's parapet and stand firm in the face of the inevitable horde.

Ladies and gentlemen, we give you Zombie Science 1Z.

Zombie Science 1Z is a lecture format show, complete with course notes, that educates and entertains. Split into three modules: The Zombiesm Condition, The Cause of Zombieism and Preventing and Curing Zombiesm. Doctor Austin, Theoretical Zombiologist of the Zombie Institute of Theoretical Studies (ZITS) uses real-world examples to explore the science and the fiction of the shambling abomination we (think we) know and love. There are even online exams you can take.

The course is intense, but I hope to graduate soon.
In his mission to educate the masses, Doctor Austin takes us into the once-forbidden secret world of clipboards and bunsen burners. We caught the last night of Doctor Austin's current run of live shows at The Courtyard Theatre as part of the London Horror Festival.

Zombie Science 1Z was the perfect evening's entertainment and our journey home was sustained by a wonderfully tasty Swiss roll, although we narrowly missed out on the cauliflower (you probably had to be there!). It was a pleasure to meet Doctor Austin. A convergence of great minds... well, more like he blinded me with science whilst I grinned and then said. "Your Zombie show is EPIC!"

Doctor Austin and Zombie Ad. "and crossbows." he said.

If you missed Doctor's Austin's spectacular lectures this year do not despair, much of his life's work is contained within his book Zombie Science 1Z from Severed Press available now at Zombie Shop.

Zombie Science 1Z by Doctor Austin, available at zombieshop.co.uk

We're pretty sure he'll have something special planned for 2012. Zombie Science 1Z was a superb night out and highly recommended for all zombie enthusiasts. Visit the ZITS website and be sure to follow Doctor Austin's Zomblog for up-to-the-minute articles and information on future shows.

Please be careful out there and remember, in the words of Doctor Austin.

"You can always make new friends, but there's no cure for Zombieism."

"Knowledge... and crossbows." he said.

Now, please wash your hands.

The Official Zombie Handbook (UK) by Sean T. Page

We've read the books, played the games and even acted out our survival simulation. But, do we really, and I mean REALLY, know what to do when a zombie attack turns this green and pleasant land into planet terror?

The Official Zombie Handbook (UK) is the Ministry of Zombies answer to this worrysome question.
Read this book and avoid becoming a cheap meat-snack for the zombies!

There is no escaping immediate comparisons with Max Brooks’ The Zombie Survival Guide. Whilst Brook’s guide is best enjoyed washed down with a beer and some pretzels, Page’s work is the perfect accompaniment to a nice cup of tea and a packet of custard creams.

Split into easy to digest sections, The Official Zombie Handbook (UK) brings the prospect of surviving an onslaught of flesh-eating undead very much into our rather British world of double-decker buses, the welfare state, cricket on the green and a distinct lack of easily obtainable firearms.
The only thing missing is a section on how to queue during the zombie apocalypse.
The Official Zombie Handbook (UK) is a must read alongside the deeds to your Victorian sea fort (so obvious I don’t know why we never thought of it).
It skirts a very fine line between meticulously researched detail laced with subtly dark humour and a paranoid survivalist mantra. Which is, in our opinion, exactly the way any guide to surviving a zombie apocalypse should be.

You can WIN a FREE copy of The Official Zombie Handbook (UK) signed by author Sean T. Page over at the Zombie Shop facebook page. Competition ends 6th November 2011.

Deep Silver Raids Piggy Bank for Dead Island Launch

Deep Silver have well and truly raided the coffers in a bid to ensure Dead Island gets stamped into the very fabric of zombie culture and becomes a household name.

Dead Island - Trouble in paradise.

So, can their zombie themed rpg-first-person-shooter-basher compete with the likes of this year's mammoth releases?

The holy console trinity of 2011: Modern Warfare 3, Gears of War 3 and Battlefield 3 (what is it with the 3's at the moment?) are going be challenging hulks to go toe to toe with.

Dead Island - Katana vs Asylum freak!
Deep Silver say the Dead Island campaign is 'The biggest global marketing spend in the history of Deep Silver'. Something tells us their investment will be secure, as long as they deliver on the goods.

Expect to see TV slots hitting prime time starting this week and all the way through September and, with the profile expected to be sky-high, next time you tell one of your Mum's mates you like zombies, don't be surprised if they reply 'You mean like those things in Dead Island?'

Dead Island - zombies just want hugs.
A huge range of exciting Dead Island 'stuff' should also be hitting the streets any second now, including the Dead Island Book by Mark Morris.
So... time to book an all expenses paid luxury break in paradise? Not sure about that but we'll first in the queue when the game comes out on September 9th 2011.

World War Z - Glasgow in Ruins

As filming for World War Z gets underway parts of Glasgow will be in ruins for the next couple of weeks.

Glasgow or Philadelphia - Picture from bbc.co.uk
Last month an open casting was held to recruit a horde of local zombies and now a cast and crew of around 1,200 will be shooting scenes in George Square and other locations across Glasgow city centre.

Glasgow was chosen as a location for World War Z because of the architecture, wide roads and layout, which is grid based like most US cites.

Iconic yellow cabs and UK bollards. Picture from bbc.co.uk

The film is set in Philadelphia so false shop fronts, traffic signals, road signs and American cars were being brought in to complete the illusion.

US road signs waiting to be installed. Picture from bbc.co.uk

The production is likely to bring in excess of £2m to the local economy according to Glasgow City Council.
City Council leader, Gordon Matheson said: "We are ready to welcome the World War Z production to Glasgow."

"There is great anticipation in the city ahead of such a huge film coming here."

With recent revelations of the movie's synopsis showing the film set during the outbreak, rather than during with the aftermath, as in Max Brook's 2006 novel, fans are worried, but aren't we always?

Every big budget zombie movie in recent years has been a financial success. The future of such a large-scale production could have implications for the zombiephiles wish-list of movies we'd love to see made.

Mr Pitt, the undead eyes of the world are on you now.

How to Kill a Zombie in Melee

Useful advice. A cricket bat, baseball bat, or a simple piece of 2 by 4 may be your best friend in the event of the zombie apocalypse, especially in a country where gun laws prevent a proliferation of firearms.

Zombiesque - Zombie Anthology

When it comes to genre fiction, anthologies are not necessarily at the top of the list. The majority of compilations typically herald from the pens of a number of he genre's best and brightest, one can't help feeling that the tales are often disparate, unconnected and only loosely connected by subject matter.

It all honestly, the same might have been said for Zombiesque, although in this case, there really is a distinctly common thread binding more than just the pages together.

Zombiesque - Zombie anthology.

Zombiesque contains 16 original stories about the lifestyles of the living dead. It is not a collection of stories about surviving the apocalypse, nor is it a gathering of abstract tales loosely based around the zombie theme, Zombiesque is the zombie's side of the story.

Whilst the concept of 'thinking' zombies might appear to fly in the face of canon for the apocalyptic flesh-eater fan the book kicks off with 'At First Only Darkness' by Nancy Collins. The subject matter could be straight out of a Romero movie, only this time we're seeing things from the shambler's point of view.

Things do get a little more abstract. 'Gimme a Z' is a story about a cheerleader who won't let death kick her off the team and it comes from the pen of Seanan McGuire, the author of the superb Newsflash Trilogy as Mira Grant, which has rapidly become one of the most talked about zombie trilogies created.

Laslo Xalieri's 'The Confession' is a brooding yarn that takes the concept of the thinking zombie to the level of Wellington's 'Monster' trilogy. The dark tale treads heavily on the coattails of Poe and brings a heavy dose of horror to boot.

The tales are well written and most importantly they are page-turners, less an exploration of eloquent prose (although 'Zombie Zero' takes a fair stab) and more pure storytelling.

Some tales might not sit so well with zombie purists, the holiday resort where visitors can become temporary zombies, an undead Nascar driver and a zombie cheerleader are about as far away from the Night of The Living Dead as many might wish to tread.

If you can get around the concept that zombies might actually think, at least in some way of another, Zombiesque is well worth a read.

Planet Terror

"Humanity's last hope... rests on a high power machine gun!!?"

Planet Terror "A Kick-Ass Zombie Movie" - The Sunday Sport

If someone told you that Rose Mcgowan would be hotter than hell with just one leg you might be forgiven for replying "..erm...excuse me?" If they then said that she'd be even hotter still with an M16 M203 in it's place you might say "...erm... ok." and walk away slowly. But that was before Robert Rodriguez made Planet Terror.

Planet Terror - Rose McGowan - Crackshot!

Planet Terror Synopsis
Less than happily married doctors William and Dakota Block (Josh Brolin and Marley Shelton) find their nightshift inundated with townsfolk ravaged by gangrenous sores and a suspiciously vacant look in their eyes. Among the casualties brought in is Cherry Darling (Rose McGowan), a go-go dancer whose leg was ripped clean off during a roadside attack, and El Wray (Freddy Rodriguez), a mysterious drifter with a past. Cherry Darling  might have been knocked off her feet and down on her luck, but she hasn’t danced her last number...

When the mysterious virus turns the hospital patients into enraged bloodthirsty maniacs, Cherry and El Wray lead a gang of accidental soldiers out into the gore-filled night, hurtling towards a destiny that will leave millions infected, countless dead and a just the last lucky few heading for the last safe corner of PLANET TERROR.

Rose McGowan and Marley Shelton

Planet Terror is no typical zombie movie. It's fast-paced with comic book action and a healthy topping of grindhouse cheese. The 'missing reel' gag is a hilarious concept, but we can;t help wondering if the movie would actually be better if the footage was included. Watch a second of third time and it just bugs you.

Quentin Tarrntino - It's him, just in BDUs!
Loose yourself and it's fantastic fun with superb performances and some of the coolest cameos you ever thought possible. Dip out out the 'I'm along for the ride' mindset and you might be left thinking it's all just a bit silly.

It's a beer and pretsels flick, superb for a zack-attack quick fix and the eye candy and innuendo are first class. Plant Terror gets a Zombie Shop seal of approval.

Trailer Park of Terror

Rednecks and Zombies! A head-on collision that’s more hillbilly undead than gore-stained overalls on a reanimated Alabama rattlesnake.

Trailer Park of Terror - Zombie Slasher

This definitely ain’t about Karma!
Noma is a trailer Park Queen - when her boyfirned is killed by the local trailer park bullies, Norma makes a pact with the devil and takes her revenge...
Six troubled high school students and their chaperone are returning from a reteat when their bus crashes, stranding them in the middle of Trailer Park Hell... literally!
Trailer Park of Terror - The Reapers are coming.

Trailer Park of Terror is more ‘Wrong Turn’ than anything that resembles an ‘of the Dead’ tribute. It's far more likely to appeal to fans of the black comedy slasher-flick genre.
The movie gets off to a superb start but falters a little as it drifts into a formula of teenager meets grisly end due to crimes of morailty, but Nichole Hiltz plays a fantastic lead as the good girl gone bad. The set-pieces are well executed, if a little cliched, and there's even a big fat scary zombie lass to rival Dawn of The Dead (2004)

Nichole Hiltz - Trailer Park Queen... of the Damned.

Trailer Park of Terror is based on the Imperium Comics Series of the same name. With top-notch special effects and a scorching southern-fried soundtrack. Those who know their country music will welcome Trace Adkins cameo as 'The Man', and the film's director, Steven Goldmann, is known for his country music videos. This movie is slick, well shot and nasty fun for the hardcore horror fan.

Trailer Park of Terror - Trace Adkins as 'The Man'

It's not one for apocalyptic Romero die-hards, Trailer Park of Terror is a welcome excursion from the typical zombie flick. Zombies that talk? These Reapers play slide guitar!
