Planet Terror

"Humanity's last hope... rests on a high power machine gun!!?"

Planet Terror "A Kick-Ass Zombie Movie" - The Sunday Sport

If someone told you that Rose Mcgowan would be hotter than hell with just one leg you might be forgiven for replying "..erm...excuse me?" If they then said that she'd be even hotter still with an M16 M203 in it's place you might say "...erm... ok." and walk away slowly. But that was before Robert Rodriguez made Planet Terror.

Planet Terror - Rose McGowan - Crackshot!

Planet Terror Synopsis
Less than happily married doctors William and Dakota Block (Josh Brolin and Marley Shelton) find their nightshift inundated with townsfolk ravaged by gangrenous sores and a suspiciously vacant look in their eyes. Among the casualties brought in is Cherry Darling (Rose McGowan), a go-go dancer whose leg was ripped clean off during a roadside attack, and El Wray (Freddy Rodriguez), a mysterious drifter with a past. Cherry Darling  might have been knocked off her feet and down on her luck, but she hasn’t danced her last number...

When the mysterious virus turns the hospital patients into enraged bloodthirsty maniacs, Cherry and El Wray lead a gang of accidental soldiers out into the gore-filled night, hurtling towards a destiny that will leave millions infected, countless dead and a just the last lucky few heading for the last safe corner of PLANET TERROR.

Rose McGowan and Marley Shelton

Planet Terror is no typical zombie movie. It's fast-paced with comic book action and a healthy topping of grindhouse cheese. The 'missing reel' gag is a hilarious concept, but we can;t help wondering if the movie would actually be better if the footage was included. Watch a second of third time and it just bugs you.

Quentin Tarrntino - It's him, just in BDUs!
Loose yourself and it's fantastic fun with superb performances and some of the coolest cameos you ever thought possible. Dip out out the 'I'm along for the ride' mindset and you might be left thinking it's all just a bit silly.

It's a beer and pretsels flick, superb for a zack-attack quick fix and the eye candy and innuendo are first class. Plant Terror gets a Zombie Shop seal of approval.

Dublin Zombie Walk 2011 - 23 July 2011

Zombies and good causes go hand in hand, obviously. There's the eradication of the human species on one hand and then there's Zombie Walks for charity on the other.

Look Dead, the zombies are coming!!

"Look Dead, the zombies are coming!!!"

The Dublin Zombie Walk takes place this Saturday, 23rd July 2011, in Dublin, which is good, because being called the Dublin Zombie Walk, Dublin is where the majority of zombie lovers in the local area are gonna rock up in their zombie threads.

Find out more at the Dublin Zombie Walk 2011 website.

Not sure exactly what to do on the day? Check out the Dublin Zombie Walk 2001 FAQ.

The Dublin Zombie Walk is a MASSIVE charity walk in aid of the Irish Cancer Society & the RNLI. You can donate directly from the Dublin Zombie Walk 2011 website, so even if you can't make it and you want to support these causes, drop in and hit their donate button.

When we say MASSIVE, we mean MAHOOZIVE with a capital Z!

Over 12,000 people have confirmed attendance.

The walk starts at St. Stephens Green (Leeson Street Entrance) at 2pm.

SPREAD THE WORD!!
Tell your friends, tell your family, tell the world!

Trailer Park of Terror

Rednecks and Zombies! A head-on collision that’s more hillbilly undead than gore-stained overalls on a reanimated Alabama rattlesnake.

Trailer Park of Terror - Zombie Slasher

This definitely ain’t about Karma!
Noma is a trailer Park Queen - when her boyfirned is killed by the local trailer park bullies, Norma makes a pact with the devil and takes her revenge...
Six troubled high school students and their chaperone are returning from a reteat when their bus crashes, stranding them in the middle of Trailer Park Hell... literally!
Trailer Park of Terror - The Reapers are coming.

Trailer Park of Terror is more ‘Wrong Turn’ than anything that resembles an ‘of the Dead’ tribute. It's far more likely to appeal to fans of the black comedy slasher-flick genre.
The movie gets off to a superb start but falters a little as it drifts into a formula of teenager meets grisly end due to crimes of morailty, but Nichole Hiltz plays a fantastic lead as the good girl gone bad. The set-pieces are well executed, if a little cliched, and there's even a big fat scary zombie lass to rival Dawn of The Dead (2004)

Nichole Hiltz - Trailer Park Queen... of the Damned.

Trailer Park of Terror is based on the Imperium Comics Series of the same name. With top-notch special effects and a scorching southern-fried soundtrack. Those who know their country music will welcome Trace Adkins cameo as 'The Man', and the film's director, Steven Goldmann, is known for his country music videos. This movie is slick, well shot and nasty fun for the hardcore horror fan.

Trailer Park of Terror - Trace Adkins as 'The Man'

It's not one for apocalyptic Romero die-hards, Trailer Park of Terror is a welcome excursion from the typical zombie flick. Zombies that talk? These Reapers play slide guitar!

Zombie Card Games and Board Games - Part 3

So, you ate all the survivors in Humans!!!, survived Zombiegeddon, and you were the last one to die an unimaginable death in Zombie Survival: The Board Game. Your buddies are on the way over and nobody's got to be anywhere soon.

Zombie Game Face On!!
The beer fridge is stocked, the chips are down and the salsa is chilled to perfection. What we playing this time?

If you like your zombie board games with just a smidgen more depth and re-playability

Last Night on Earth
Flying Frog Productions' Last Night on Earth is quite possibly the coolest zombie board game on the planet. It is a perfect mix of survivalist strategy, gun-toting action and long-term re-playability. Set in the sleepy town of Woodinvale you get, among other things, a cast of eight small town heroes (more than you can play all at once), a modular board with a double sided centre-piece, and some of the best miniatures seen (scaled at around 28-32mm, for those who play zombie skirmish games) it even comes with a CD soundtrack to get you in the mood. The mechanics of the game are pretty easy to pick up, but there's enough complexity that is might take a game to get a it right, but once the rules are squared away the possibilities are endless. Best of all the game is scenario based, with 5 scenarios included to get you going and there are currently four more official Last Night on Earth web scenarios. Last Night on Earth has a cinematic action-horror feel so make sure you have plenty of popcorn to hand. The feel and quality of the components are superb and it's a game you can play again and again.

Flying Frog Productions Last Night on Earth - Zombie Board Game

Last Night on Earth: Hero Pack One
Want more?  Last Night on Earth: Hero Pack One brings you four new fantastic characters, cards and miniatures, ten new game cards and a brand new scenario.

Last Night on Earth - Hero Park One

Last Night on Earth: Zombies with Grave Weapons
Still want more? Last Night on Earth: Zombies with Grave Weapons provides 14 plastic zombies, featuring seven new sculpts, to add to your horde and comes with two exclusive new weapons only available with this set.

Last Night on Earth - Zombies with Grave Weapons

All Things Zombie
All Things Zombie from Lock 'n' Load games is based on Ed Teixeira's 2006 Origins Award-Winning miniatures game of the same name. All Things Zombie is a name synonymous with zombie tabletop gamers the world over as one of the finest sets of zombie gaming rules available. All Things Zombie, otherwise known as ATZ, is all about real life in an unreal world. It can be played as a one off game or, when it really comes into its own, as an ongoing campaign in which the same survivors develop from game to game, if they survive. The game features counters in place of miniatures and despite some issues with a small percentage of copies from the first print run, ironed out in the second run, the production is good and the artwork top-notch.

All Things Zombie - Zombie board game by Lock 'n' Load Games

All Things Zombie is designed for 1-6 players, yup that's right, ONE to six. Where ATZ really stands out is its playability as a solo game. No spider solitaire and, in the opinion of many, it's possibly best as a solo game. That's not so common these days. All Things Zombie is scenario-led and the rules cover so much it skirts the boundaries of being RPG-lite and actually works if you want to run it that way.
All Things Zombie - Zombie

If you want a more in-depth board game you can play solo, fancy an RPG-lite session or like the idea of a zombie skirmish game and don't have the time or modelling skills to build your own zombie infested city, All Things Zombie fits the bill perfectly.

Zombie Card Games and Zombie Board Games - Part 2

Okay, so you've reached 10th level in Munchkin Zombies, eaten brains and avoiding getting shotgunned in Zombie Dice and you've made it to the choppa in Zombies!!! If that hasn't quite satisfied your hunger for brains or survival in a world gone insane and you want to take things a little further, what do you do now? Twilight Creations still have a lot to offer.

Humans!!!
For a slight change of pace, Humans!!! flips the viewpoint on its hugely popular Zombies!!! game. This time you get to play as a zombie and go shambling after the humans victims as only semblance of your former self. It's a stand alone game but even more fun, you can combine this with the original game and choose between playing as a zombie or a survivor in the same game. Humans!!! uses the same basic mechanics of Zombies!!!, with an even more undead twist.

Humans!!! zombie board game from Twlight Creations.

Zombiegeddon
Reiner Knizia is a multi award winning games designer so when Reiner's name is behind something you may attention. Zombiegeddon is a game of two halves, the first half spend frantically racing around the board collecting when you think is rightfully yours and the second half of the game is spent trying to survive. Whoever has the most stuff at the end of the game wins. Aimed very much from the euro-gamer, Zombiegeddon is definitely more strategy heavy than a zombie themed blast-em-up. It is slightly let down a little by some graphic design elements but remains a very strong game.

Zombiegeddon - Reiner Knizia's zombie strategy game

Zombietown
A more accessible game from Twilight Creations is Zombietown. Instead of hitting the streets in a bid to escape the action, Zombietown centres around the happenings of a small local neighbourhood. Unfortunately for you, your house is right across the street from the cemetery. Collecting and using your guns barricades and rushing off in an attempt to claim other abandoned homes is all part of the fun and the more of that you do, the more likely you are to win. 100 plastic zombies sure seems like a lot when they start shambling across the street towards your hastily barricaded home. Zombietown is designed for 3 to 6 players, however - rules for a two player game are included.

Zombietown - look out for your neighbours.

Zombie Survival: The Board Game
The mysterious event that has reanimated the dead has also given them an unhealthy hunger for your brains! Taking things a stage further comes Zombie Survival: The Board Game. Plan on staying in your own house and waiting for this to blow over? The action takes place in and around your house. Stock up on common sense survival necessities and try to out-last, or out-survive the waves of zombies and. The winner isn't the one who survives the longest, it's the one who dies last! Zombie Survival: The Board Game has a great 'this is what most people would probably end up doing' feel to it and cranks up the production value with some great game pieces.

Zombie Survival: The Board Game - Barricade

Hooked on zombie board gaming? Stocked up on munchies and ready for a lock-in?

Next time we focus on two of the most popular and in-depth zombie board games available.

Zombie Card Games and Zombie Board Games - Part 1

Not that long ago, if you wanted to get your zombie fix via a board game, it was like being the recently risen on the Shetland Islands, slap-bang in the middle of winter; slim pickings.

Now, we're spoilt for choice. Whether you're a hardcore euro-gaming uber-hobbyist or just entering the realm of zombie gaming there is a massive choice.

Zombie Gaming Quick-Fix
If time is short and you're looking for an insta-fix, Looney Lab's Zombie Fluxx should fit the bill. If you're not familiar with Fluxx, the premise is simple: draw one card, play one card - there's no set way to win and the rules change with the turn of every card, even that one above - and this time there are zombies. The rules are quick to pick up and the mechanic is a maddening mix of luck, judgement and, as with every version of Fluxx, adaptability.

Zombie Fluxx from Looney Labs

Zombie Dice
Like Zombie Fluxx Steve Jackson's Zombie Dice is perfect for an entré, palette cleanser or dessert. It's quick, simple and brain-munchingly good fun.

Zombie Dice from Steve Jackson Games

Munchkin Zombies
We could hardly mention Steve Jackson Games without bringing up Munckin Zombies. Once more, not to be taken too seriously, unless of course your character is a 10th level zombie and you insist on telling people about it. Even stangers, even your boss, even the mailman, and the lady at the post office and your shrink's cat. "There was this one time..."

Munckin Zombies from Steve Jackson Games

Zombie in my Pocket
Cambridge Games Factory put out some of the neatest little pocket games around, of which Zombie in my Pocket is undoubtably their coolest offering yet. Zombie in my Pocket is a decidedly non-cooprative game. Which is great for getting you in the dog-house with your friends, siblings or significant others.

Zombie in my Pocket from Cambridge Wargames Factory.

Zombies!!!
Twilight Creations have unquestionably produced the lion's share of zombie gaming goodness. Zombies!!!, their flagship game, is still as popular as ever in it's improved Director's Cut release.
Zombies!!! from Twilight Creations

Zombies!!! Is generally considered to be the quintessential zombie board game. Its the game most people instantly think of when they think of zombie board games and deservedly so. Coolest of all, it comes with 100 plastic zombies. It's a great little game and perfect for anyone who wants to take their zombie gaming just a little bit further without being too caught up in game mechanics. You can play the game cooperatively, or at least you can try, because once push comes to shove and escape is close at hand, you might just be worrying a little less about 'those others' than yelling "Get to da chappa!" to your buddies.

Can't get enough Zombies!!!There are nine, count 'em, nine supplements for Zombies!!!, each one adding combinations of new areas to explore, more cards, more zombies and new rules. Probably the most tantalising and terryfying of all are the Mall Walkers and Send in the Clowns expansions, which even comes with custom scuplted Zombie Clowns!!! and you can pick up more Zombie Clowns!!! if you need them!

Zombies!!! 7 - Send in the Clowns from Twilight Creations.
Next time... take your zombie gaming to the next level as we explore the zombie board games that are the perfect accompaniment to a chips, dips and beer gameathon.

How to Survive a Zombie Attack

The methodologies for surviving a zombie attack can be confusing at times.

Run or barricade, guns or hand weapons, team up or go it alone. Assessing on your options and making a decision can be baffling at the best of times. At the worst of times it would be even more difficult, most difficult in the event that the zombies are up, shambling and a-knocking at the door of a farmhouse you've just fled into. It might be a little too late to go with the flow and choose your destiny on the fly.

"What's that? The tank is empty and the pump is out by the barn? Do you they think they'll wait a bit while we fill her up?."

Night of the Living Dead (1968) - Too late to make plans now!

The daily grind has a habit of interfering with Zombie Apocalypse preparation so thankfully there are others that have done the hard work for us.

After watching this informative broadcast from Bad Idea Films, we feel infinitely safer and better prepared to face the threat of a zombie invasion. We have also purchased a lighter and a semi-trailer full of refried beans. Thank you BI Industries.

Tokyo Zombie - The Japanese Shaun of The Dead

If one genre just isn't enough, an offer is made by script-writers and producers alike.

"What if we take <this>, and add <this>?"

That's exactly what happened for the makers of Tokyo Zombie."What if we take Ju-Jitsu, and add Zombies?"

Tokyo Zombie

Directed by Sakichi Satô, Tokyo Zombie is a martial arts zombie comedy, based on Yusaku Hanakuma's manga of the same name.

Something to take seriously? Not in the slightest. If you're used to the over the top antics and slapstick humour of Asian cinema then this is for you. If not, probably not a movie high on your 'must see' list.

Blue-collar workers Fujio and Mitsuo share a dream, to become famous fighters. Tokyo has becomes occupied by zombies, the dead walk and the two men face a crisis of mankind. Despite the turn of events they have a plan. Real men go to Russia. After an unfortunate turn of events, the two are separated before they can fulfill their dream together. Through the trials of a dystopian future their dream will not die and one turn of fate leads them back together, to face their destinies in a way they could never have imagined.

Tadanobu Asano and Shô Aikawa - stars of Asian cinema.
Tokyo Zombie is Wacky with a capital W, and that W has been drawn over again and again with a big magic marker, then highlighted and coloured in with fluorescent paint, and then had a spotlight aimed at it. Zany... and then some. Not your typical zombie movie, not even a typical movie, but if you like Asian cinema comedy, not to be missed.

Sometimes known in Tokyo Zombie as: the bald one, and the one with the Afro.

Dawn of The Dead (2004) The Director's Cut

One moment in 2004 has probably caused more debate and discussion on zombie lore than any other in recent history.

It is 6.37 am. Ana Clarke's husband collapses to the bed after Vivian, their next door neighbour's little girl, takes a chunk out of his neck. Ana throws the girl out of the bedroom and she slides across the hallway. She watches in horror as the girls springs to her feet with the agility of a gymnast and, screeching like a rabid stray, charges towards her.

"Call an Ambulance!"

Boyle's 28 Days Later featured running 'infected' in 2002 and there's no denying it paved the way for a massive increase in popularity for the apocalyptic survival horror genre. At the time however, it was referred to as 'not actually a zombie movie', a statement that years later Mr Boyle denied. It was a zombie movie, just a little different.

Zack Snyder's remake of George A. Romero's 1978 classic had a lot to live up to.

When the movie hit cinemas we anxiously set off to see what a mess they'd made of one of our all time favorites. We were pleasantly surprised.

Snyder's remake delivers at a terriying pace that keeps up with modern blockbusters and the action sequences are intense and believeable. The movie is an ensemble piece, dispensing with the small group of the original and introduces a significantly larger and relatively well rounded cast of varying archetypes with a little more depth than the usual cliques.

Dawn of The Dead (2004) - Ensemble cast.

Ana's (Sarah Polley) development through the movie is not necessarily clear and sometimes shifts a little too easily; a sore point with many, but the performances are top notch. Rhames is superb as Kenneth, a definite nod to Foree's Peter and Jake Webber's Michael plays a very strong supporting lead.

The production is terrific and, as a Hollywood big budget affair, the effects and make up are as good as they come. The additional footage in The Director's Cut release doesn't make significant changes, but if you're a fan of the film, they don't detract and Andy's 'Lost Tape' is not to be missed.

Andy (Bruce Bohne)

Look out for cameo's from Scott Reiniger, Tom Savini and Ken Foree. Snyder is clearly a fan the master's original work. Romero is reported to have said about the movie "It was better than I expected. ... The first 15, 20 minutes were terrific, but it sort of lost its reason for being. It was more of a video game. I'm not terrified of things running at me; it's like Space Invaders. There was nothing going on underneath."

Fans of the genre were split down the middle with regards to the movie working or not but one thing's for sure - for every person that says 'original' somebody else pipes up with 'remake.' The 2004 movie was unquestionably apocalyptic and gets a Zombie Shop thumbs up.

We certainly don't think Snyder's Dawn trumped Romero's or that running zombies are the 'correct' zombies, but there's no denying that runners, artistic licence or not, are darned scary. The 2004 remake has earned its place as a must-have movie in the great zombie library.

What's your take? Runners or Shamblers?
